Interesting Facts About CANARY

The Canary, is a small songbird in the finch family originating from the Macaronesian Islands (Azores, Madeira and Canary Islands). Here are some Interesting facts about these cute birds :-

1. Canaries live an average of 5 to 9 years. Canaries are named from the island in which they came, the Canary Islands.

2. Wild canaries are usually gray or green instead of the yellow color we know in domesticated birds.

3. They are small birds, averaging from 3 to 6 inches and weighing in at approximately 20 grams.

4. Canaries lay a clutch of three to seven eggs that hatch in approximately two weeks.

5. Almost every type of canary has the capability of song, but some prefer to sing a lot more than others.

6. Germany is famous for the singing canary birds bred in this country. While other countries choose to breed for color or type Germany specialized in breeding these birds for exquisite song properties instead.

7. Until the early sixteenth century it was not possible to find female canary birds for sale outside of Spain. Only males were sold and exported up to this point, so that Spain maintained tight control of the trade in these birds.

8. Canaries were once regularly used in coal mining as an early warning system. Toxic gases such as carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide in the mine would kill the bird before affecting the miners.
